Brazil has recently initiated visa requirements for Australia, Canada, and US citizens, which will come into effect on 10 April 2025. This includes citizens who hold dual national status between Brazil and Australia if they travel on the Australian passport.
If you are traveling to Brazil as a dual national with a Brazilian passport, this rule change will not apply as the Brazilian government does not apply restrictions or visa requirements to Brazilian passport holders.
Australians traveling to Brazil are urged to check if they have the relevant visa for the duration of their visit, as failure can be met with stiff penalties such as fines, deportation, or entry refusal.
The Brazilian government has stated Australians should not “wait until the last minute” to apply for a visa, even a simple tourist visa.
The Australian foreign office has not yet updated their official website with the visa requirements so Australians may fall afoul of this new rule due to lack of information. However, they do state that entry requirements are subject to change without warning, and it is best to check with the Brazilian embassy before travel.
