China Launches Online Visa Application for US-Based Travelers

Friday, Sep 26, 2025

The online visa application system will be in operation at the Chinese diplomatic missions in the United States from September 30, 2025.

This move will make the visa application process more convenient, as applicants can fill out the form, submit the supporting documents, and make payment online.

With its launch, both U.S. citizens and legal residents in the U.S. can use the system to apply for visas to China.

Previously, the visa application process required two in-person visits. Applicants had to submit the application and other required documents, and after approval, travel to the diplomatic mission again to provide biometric information and submit their passports.

From September 30, applicants can complete the first part online and either submit their passport by post or in person by visiting the embassy or consulate. Their fingerprints may be collected during their visit.

Chinese Ambassador to the US, Xie Feng, said on social media on Friday, “Easier visas, smoother trips!”

The implementation of an online visa system is part of larger efforts to increase tourist arrivals in China. Nationals from 75 countries can now travel without a visa to China, and travelers from 55 countries can enjoy visa-free transits.

Since the start of the year, China has seen nearly 16 million visa-free arrivals by foreign visitors, marking a year-on-year increase of 52 per cent from 2024, according to the figures released by the National Immigration Administration on Thursday.

China has also been simplifying the entry rules for American citizens, even though they still require a visa to visit the country.

Since January 2024, US visitors no longer have to submit proof of return flight tickets, hotel bookings, invitation letters, and travel itineraries.
