Kyrgyz Republic Authorizes Procedure for Awarding Digital Nomad Status to Foreigners

Saturday, May 24, 2025

The Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic have approved regulations concerning the procedure for granting the status of “Digital Nomad” to foreign citizens, according to a report by Kazinform on May 13.

The Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Adylbek Kasymaliev, signed resolution No. 241 on April 30, 2025, putting in place a permanent mechanism for awarding the status. The resolution will come into force 15 days after its official publication.

The status is applicable to professionals in information and communication technologies, software development, and other related fields. Citizens from a total of 61 countries will be eligible to apply, including visa-free countries such as Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, and Russia, and non-visa-exempt countries such as Germany, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The Kyrgyz Republic’s authorized migration body is responsible for granting the Digital Nomad status. Foreign nationals who have been granted this status will be exempted from compulsory registration at their place of residence for a maximum of 60 days after entering the country.

After this initial 60-day period, they can extend the status for one year, with the option of renewing every year for up to 10 years.

The Digital Nomad status eliminates the need to hold a work permit during the validity period, permitting its holders to work as individual entrepreneurs or company founders and create local bank accounts without residential registration.

Applicants from countries with a visa regime must additionally apply for a “DN” type visa. Applications will be processed within seven working days from the submission of all the required documents.

The personal identification number (PIN) will be automatically issued through the AMT “ZHAAK” system without needing to personally visit government agencies. There are currently no restrictions on the minimum income for applying for the Digital Nomad status, but there may be such requirements in the future.

Kyrgyzstan’s neighbouring country, Kazakhstan, introduced a similar program in November 2024 called the Neo Nomad Visa. It plans to attract remote workers in the programming, marketing, finance, consulting, design, and e-commerce fields from around the world to live and work in Kazakhstan. The visa grants eligible applicants permission to stay for up to one year while being employed by international companies.
